So, the conclusion I came to very long ago, that single use batteries are terrifyingly inefficient while being seductively cheap, is still vindicated. Back then, they were *expensive* for an impecunious student, and frankly, a little rubbish…

Rechargeables are not perfect, but if reused, even for a fraction of the cited lifetime, will pay down the environmental costs for each cycle. Recycling the spent units is a bonus, not to downplay its importance, but the more cycles we can eke out of each battery, the better.
