So, new Windows installation, new rules.

Until recently, I’ve grandfathered most of my machines up from Windows versions I am actually embarrassed to reveal, so all my tweaks generally made it through the process.

An actual new machine is a bit of challenge for me as it doesn’t happen very often (about every Windows major release).

So, the “Devices and Printers” irritation is ongoing TODO related post

And in point of fact, the carefully hidden wizard is a far superior solution in any event

I present:

C:\Windows\System32\wiaacmgr.exe

Yes, it’s just a bog standard utility from way back when.

Why is this thing so hard to find or identify?

DuckDuckGo, their information unpolluted by ads get it right first time. *at time of writing

And why does everyone think it needs “fixing”?

“Mine seems fine”

Ok, let’s scan!

If you have only one scanner installed , you get this simple, lightweight and working scanner Wizard.

One Scanner

Win

Zero scanners

No loss

More than one — you’ll need to pick!

So, what it so heinous about that thing?

I don’t know — maybe it’s not Metro style, or they want to charge for new development, or maybe it shows all the printer driver cruft certain people *cough* HP *cough* leave in place?

No, that one in fact does not exist at that address
