Hey, congratulations!
I was in literally the last cohort that did not have student loans in the UK (1989).
In fact, I even looked into getting one, but couldn't get one - (it was a few thousand pounds - ha!).
Since then our students have been increasingly financialised, in a model that contractually appears to be a "lite" version of the American ecosystem, but - and I can barely believe I'm writing this - where the average debt level is apparently higher.
Now I have kids who will probably have to assume that burden, and their immediate future has been packaged up as a product.
I'm hoping to "stay lucky" and then I'll be able to pay it off for them as soon as possible, so at worst it will just be a short bridging loan. But that's due to my privilege (and contingent on continuing good fortune) and who knows if that plan will work out?
